Narcan (Naloxone) – What It Is & How to Use It
Learn how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose with this life-saving medication.
What is Narcan?
Narcan is the brand name for naloxone, a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdoses.
It works by blocking opioid receptors in the brain, helping restore normal breathing in someone experiencing an overdose.
It has no effect on someone who does not have opioids in their system.
Forms of Narcan
Nasal Spray
Most commonly used as a nasal spray (easy to administer).
Injectable Form
Also available as an injectable form (used by medical professionals or trained individuals).
How to Administer Narcan Nasal Spray
Check and Call
Check responsiveness and breathing. If the person is unresponsive, proceed.
Call 911 immediately.
Position
Lay the person on their back and tilt their head back slightly.
Administer
Remove the Narcan from the box, place the nozzle into one nostril, and press the plunger firmly.
Monitor and Repeat if Needed
Wait 2–3 minutes. If there's no response, administer a second dose in the other nostril.
Stay with the person until emergency help arrives.
Important Notes
Narcan is safe, non-addictive, and has no potential for misuse.
Always call emergency services, even if the person wakes up — Narcan wears off in 30–90 minutes, and overdose symptoms can return.
Store Narcan at room temperature and check expiration dates regularly.
